S, my grandparents have this problem. They never leave the house at the same time unless they’re going somewhere together, so their second vehicle just sits in the driveway and does nothing. Ever. However, I inadvertently helped them solve this problem when I got into my accident. Long story short, they’re just GIVING me their truck. It’s not exactly a beater or anything, either. They really wanted to sell it. I never would have even asked for a discount if I were to buy it, let alone the whole thing for free. So.... wow. I’m getting a first-gen (not sure on the year) Chevy Colorado. It’s like this, but with the super short cab.

Kinja'd!!!

68,000 miles, only 10k on the current tires, one owner, well maintained. It’s worth a whole lot more than nothing, but it’ll be mine! I’m definitely going to treat them to something nice next time I visit.

Now, there’s the issue of bringing it home. It’s in Milan, Michigan. I’m in Norcross, Georgia. You may notice that those are different states. Do you have any recommendations of a good shipper, or would it be cheaper to fly up and drive it home myself?

I would fly up there and drive it back. It’s only 65 0 miles or so.

Google says that’s 700 miles and about 10 hours. I say it’s adventure time.

Fly up to see your grandparents and thank them profusely. Probably the least you could do if they are giving you a truck. Cost will probably be about the same

Yeah, I've made a few long drives before, so it's definitely no big deal to me. I'd prefer to bring a friend to keep me company, though, so that doubles the price of the flight.

Yeah, that’s what I’m most likely doing . It sucks that I can't spend the whole weekend there with them, but it'll be nice to visit for a little bit.

Hub to hub the flight could be really cheap if you go with a budget carrier.

That’s likely not going to be worth shipping that distance, especially if you want it in a timely manner. The cheaper auto shipping options are generally a carrier working on a circuit who would pickup the car when they’re in the area, and it would ride along until the route comes around to your area.  A shipper making a dedicated run is much more expensive.   Flying up there and driving it back would probably be the way to go. A one way car rental and driving it back could be an option, too, although that would probably end up more expensive by time gas costs are factored in.

I’ve done Detroit to SC a couple of times. The road is good (outside of Detroit) and the scenery is pretty damn good too. Like many suggested, drive it back!

If I hadn’t already allocated-away my vacation time from work, then I’d be hella-down to fetch that with a roadtrip.

Visit your grandparents and buy them a very nice dinner.

I’ve always wanted a minitruck , so that's not off the table. A quick eBay search shows that I can drop it ~3" for like $200, so I mean.....

Its - almost- always cheaper to drive unless you’re losing money spending the time driving it

Those are some good grandparents, you definitely want to fly up and thank them in person (as well as get the truck). And honestly, coming from someone whose last grandparent died a decade ago, you probably should try to see them as much as possible anyway.

If you want to have a road trip buddy, I say just suck it up and buy the ticket for them, two tickets is still way cheaper than buying a new car.

Nice, 4cyl or 5cyl? I have an 04 5cyl Canyon with 185k miles that I bought new. Its been very reliable for me.

That’s also an e asy drive. I live in Palm Beach FL and bought my other car in Cleveland. Flew up on the first flight Saturday morning, finished the deal, had lunch and drove back. I stopped in Atlanta for the night then finished the rest on Sunday. I went to college in Flint so I’ve also done that MI to FL drive a few times.

You can fly up Saturday, spend the day, and drive back Sunday.

No idea, but probably just a 4cyl.

And yeah, I’ll fly up on a Saturday after work. I’m off Sundays and Mondays, so I'll spend the night with them and drive home the next two days.

Good choice on the Colorado. We had one, a 2004. Pretty much bare bones, though it did have a CD player. Such a great truck, would buy one again.

Go see grandies, get nice truck. Unless they're horrible people, which doesn't seem likely, going to see them while they're still available is never a bad plan

Thats definitely true!

Ad this is only somewhat related, but I was just thinking about them and death and stuff the other day; my other grandfather is turning 90 this year, but this grandmother is only about 75 or so. I can’t remember specifically. So, while she won’t be around forever, I realized that it’s not unfair to give her at least another 15-ish years. That’s particularly interesting because she has an 8-year-old great granddaughter already, and 23 isn’t *too* early to have a child. So.... there’s an okay chance that she’ll be around long enough to be a great-great-grandmother.

To tally unrelated to the post, but I just thought it was neat.

Back on topic, you're definitely right that I should see them as much as I can while I still have them around.
